Using Your Senses, Or Not
This is something I’ve thought about before but never figured out how to articulate. It’s a nice contrast to the advice I keep seeing that says you have to use every sense in every scene. No, really, you don’t. Do you always notice what all five senses are experiencing at every moment? I only do if I’ve majorly overdone it with the caffeine.

As you said on Twitter, the people spouting that “EVERY sense in EVERY scene” nonsense seldom have a book of their own published. Coincidence? I think not… 🙂
“Use every sense in every scene” is incompatible with “Don’t bog down the narration with extraneous details.” (See what I mean about “advice” bits that are mutually exclusive?) Also, most activities don’t involve taste, for example, and adding something to each scene just to be able to include that sense will get old really quickly.
